qtr no 2

My long night of loneliness drags on,
won’t you come?
to end my pain at advent of dawn,
won’t you come?
morning rays would see the tears that
I have shed,
my eyes have lit up a thousand lamps,
won’t you come?

hu--the sufi way

muzaffar ali is a class in himself.whatever he does , he does it with class.his rumi foundation has come out with vol 3 of hu the journal.this is muzaffar ali at his best. i do not intend to write a review, not right now at least.i am only making a mention with relation to nazki.where as nazki wrote hundreds of reams on sufi way in urdu and kashmiri he wrote at least to my knowledge only one paper on this subject in english, titled mysticism in kashmir and this has been included in hu.

nazki lines

let us turn to what nazki wrote.we can pick up one fourliner every week and invite comments, discussion and responses in sketches and paintings on the lines.we begin with the 1st quartrain in namrud nama;
gaman manz geer osus yad pyoham
phekyav pethe bor zan trowum kodum wash
chatith zan drayi obras narewuzmal
kuthis zan chav bar chirnyav aender gash.
translation;
When oppressive darkness engulfs me,
when burdens of being weigh me down,
your name suddenly sets me free,
your name brightens up the sky.

Nazki sahab's Quatrains..

"A sufi embodying in himself the religious humanisam of Nund Rishi, a poet ascending the horizons in the company of Rumi and Shamas Faqir, an ascetic potraying the elitism and bygone values of Kashmir and a personality simultaneously evoking feelings of affection, respect and awe, Mir Ghulam Rasool Nazki was an epitome of old-world values and culture. Nazki sahab through his immortal quatrains unfolded all the four dimensions of his being - the past and the present, life and death. This four dimensional concept gave rise to a new Rishi attitude in his personality. A study of these quatrains rendered into english by author's son, Ayaz Rasool Nazki, will surely provide an insight into this enigmatic personality, a manisfestation of vibrant world of creativity."

translations

Echo presented to English readers the glimpse of Nazki’s genius. Off course those who could read him in the original will never settle for a translation however accurate it may be but this translation did introduce nazki to non kashmiri readers.Nazki’s favorite form was the four liner…quatrain or rubai and it is in this genre that nazki is most comfortable and exudes a remarkable artistry and mastery. In all he composed a little above 600 quatrains and echo presents a translation of 162 of them. They are drawn from his all three books. The book has an exhaustive introduction by Dr G.R.Malik prof of English.The title design is by Tabish Masood.The backcover writeup was written by a team consisting of Prof Amin Andrabi,Prof Manzur Fazili and Farooq Nazki.
